Visual communication design


art & research seminar and meeting 22.-23.3.2007
University of Lapland

Visual communication design -seminar gathered researchers, educators and students to discuss about the research and educating issues in design research area at the faculty of art and design at the University of Lapland, Rovaniemi Finland.
Associate professor dr. Thomas Leerberg from Designskole Kolding (Denmark) discussed about theory in practice: how the production of scientific knowledge is produced through design practice. In addition he presented an interesting example about a visual essay. Professor Peter Stebbing from Hochschule für Gestaltung Schwäbisch Gmünd (Germany) described by visual examples strategies for research as well as identification of design universals. In addition, he gave examples about visual language designers and artist use. Professor of design research dr. Minna Uotila (University of Lapland) reported about her past and ongoing research projects in this area. Dr. Thomas Rasmusssen who is coordinating the doctoral program in Danish Designschool described their visions about the issue. Professor dr. Kärt Summatavet from Eesti Kunstakademie described design research in industrial arts. Stephen Hitchins, who has led one of the largest advertising agencies in the world brought examples from the business world: what are the real needs in design area knowledge. The panel discussion moderated by Michael Hardt followed the presentations.

On Friday 23rd March the discussion continued in Cumulus VisCom meeting and further plans for cooperation in visual communication design network in Cumulus were made.

The output of the discussion was to establish open discussion group, Visual communication knowledge transfer forum called 'Rovaniemi Group', which main goals and ways of working are
  • to be as a knowledge bazaar
  • open for all interested
  • to incubate new ideas
  • help each other
  • next meeting in Schwäbish-Gmünd
  • do close cooperation with PREdesign (already exists in Cumulus- network, www.predesign.org) group
  • have a link on Cumulus web-pages and own pages for sharing information and discussion
